With more than a dozen wineries available for tasting in the area, it can be really difficult to choose which one to visit. This month we are highlighting one with our 7 reasons to love Newsome Harlow Wines in Murphys CA. We hope that this will make it easier to pick at least one of the tasting rooms in town!
Plan to stay at Dunbar House Inn for several days to make sure you experience the full flavors of the area! Please call us with any questions you may have!
#1–Fun Outdoor Space
When going for a wine tasting, you would think the first thing mentioned would be the wine. However, if you have some experience at a wine tasting, you will notice that many times the atmosphere and the attitude of the servers can be almost more important than the wine itself. At Newsome Harlow (NH), you get both the atmosphere and the attention to service.
The owners claim to relish the spirit of Bacchanalia hedonism; and ensure that every experience is overflowing with wine, friends, and copious amounts of laughter. The tasting room has patios in the front and back, with heaters, misters, and shade, allowing for a relaxed experience year-round. The staff consistently gets rave reviews for their infectious positive attitude and outstanding knowledge. Atmosphere and attitude set the stage for an amazing tasting experience.
#2–Concern for Stewardship of the Land
Before we even get to the exceptional quality of their wine, the land and the agricultural practices in the growing of the grapes can have a significant effect on its quality and taste. Newsome Harlow uses growers that adhere to sustainable agricultural practices, with several in the process of obtaining organic certification.
Production is limited to smaller batches using only premium grapes from carefully selected vineyards. The winemaker takes the time to walk the vineyards and maintain familiarity with the provenance of their grapes. Most of their wine is sold directly from the tasting room.
#3–Exceptional Red Wines
Finally, we get to talk about the wines! NH is most well known for their Zinfandels. Currently available are two Zinfandels, with grapes originating from two different areas in the Sierra foothills. If you are a true Zin aficionado, their wine club gives you access to some limited production wines. No worries, the winemaker claims to develop his wines to please the palates of both amateur wine drinkers and connoisseurs.
Zins are not the only wines crafted at Newsome Harlow. You will also find in the tasting room a Carignane, Petite Sirah, and Meritage, as well as several juicy red blends.
#4–Great White Wines
Don’t feel left out if you prefer white wines.! There are plenty of excellent choices, including a Sauvignon Blanc (tropical aromas of melon, passionfruit, and lemon) and a Chenin Blanc named “Drama Queen” (exotic aromatics of quince, pears, and a touch of ginger). Available to wine club members and online ordering are Chardonnay and Fume Blanc.
#5–Ten By Ten Wines
There is a collection of wines that are being bottled under the “Ten by Ten” label, a combination of both reds and whites. Rumor has it that these wines will soon be available in a separate tasting space, on a parcel a half-mile outside of town.
Currently, Newsome Harlow has renovated the original farmhouse on the property and is renting the house as a getaway. Plans for the remainder of the property include planting some vines, and, perhaps, another tasting room.
#6–Recipes for Food Pairings
Available to wine club members, but also on the website, are some amazing recipes for pairing with Newsome Harlow wines. How does a Slow Braised Brisket with nutmeg, cinnamon, dried apricots, and prunes paired with one of their Zins sound? Or Easy Sesame Ginger Chicken thighs with broccoli paired with a Carignane? Having the right food to complement the wine is sometimes a mystery, but here at Newsome Harlan, it’s decoded for you.
#7–Weekly Zoom Wine Tasting
Watch the experts every week on Zoom! Every Wednesday at 9:00 pm PT. Get the flavor of the tasting room and the winemakers without ever leaving your home. It can help prepare you for an in-person visit!
